The Java Platform is an essential technology platform for modern applications. The Jakarta EE collection of specifications, crafted on Java SE, is arguably the most widely used (directly and indirectly) development platform for enterprise applications on the Java Platform. Over the last couple of years, Jakarta EE has started evolving much faster to meet the rapidly changing needs of enterprises. However, this evolution could be improved to better address the future needs of the industry. This is why the Eclipse Foundation, the home of the Jakarta EE Platform, has introduced the Jakarta EE Future Directions Interest Group.

Why a Future-Looking Group?

The current working group structure, while important for developing and maintaining Jakarta EE specifications, often focuses on immediate technological needs and the next version release. There needs to be space for broader, future-oriented discussions. This new interest group is intended to bridge that gap by offering a platform for brainstorming, researching and presenting recommendations to the Jakarta EE and MicroProfile working groups.

Scope and Areas of Interest

The Jakarta EE Future Directions Interest Group's scope will encompass enterprise and cloud-native Java. It will collaborate closely with relevant working groups, such as the ones on Jakarta EE and MicroProfile. Key areas of interest include:

  • Emerging technologies that could shape the future of Java
  • New industry use cases and how Java can address them
  • Integrations with other technologies and platforms
  • Messaging and marketing strategies to increase Java's visibility and adoption

Open Invitation to Contribute

Jakarta EE's strength lies in its open nature. Everyone has a voice, and everyone can contribute. This new interest group embodies this spirit. Doesn’t matter if you're a seasoned Java developer, an industry influencer, or simply passionate about the future of the platform, you’re more than welcome to join this working group.

Payara, as a long-standing supporter of Jakarta EE, is proud to be part of this initiative. We believe that by working together, we can help enterprise Java evolve faster with the times and needs of its users.

Let's chart the course for Java's next chapter. Join us and let your voice be heard!
